Unemployment Info for Non-Tenured Teachers
If you have received notice that you will not be offered employment for next year please read the following information carefully. Hopefully the board will be able to rehire everyone back and none of this will be necessary.
If you have been officially informed that you will not be offered employment
next year the steps to collect unemployment are as follows:
You must open a claim on July 1. (Remember that you are contracted until
June 30 and your health benefits are available until the end of August.)
If you are not contracted by September 1 you can then collect retro-actively
to July 1.
There have been cases when unemployment has sent checks out during the
summer and the individual then was called back by September 1. If this
happens DO NOT cash those checks. Unemployment is going to want their money
back in one LUMP sum and if you can't do that they will garnish your wages
and then your credit rating is history.
